World Oceans Day

Celebrated on June 8, World Oceans Day is much more than a symbolic date. It’s a global moment for reflection, education, and action in favour of the seas, which cover more than 70% of Earth’s surface and play a vital role in the planet’s balance — and in the survival of countless species, including our own.

Why are oceans so important?

Oceans:

  • Produce more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe;

  • Regulate the global climate, absorbing much of the heat and carbon dioxide (CO₂);

  • Sustain ecosystems with millions of marine species;

  • Feed communities with resources such as fish and seafood;

  • Generate jobs in sectors like fishing, transport, tourism, and scientific research.

Without healthy oceans, there is no healthy planet.

Threats they face

Unfortunately, oceans are seriously endangered by human activity. Major issues include:

  • Plastic pollution, which harms marine life and enters our food chain;

  • Overfishing, which threatens many species and disrupts ecological balance;

  • Ocean acidification, caused by excess CO₂, which affects coral reefs and marine organisms;

  • Oil spills and industrial chemical waste;

  • Global warming, which alters ocean currents and melts the polar ice caps.

The 2025 theme: “Awaken the Blue”

Each year, the United Nations launches a central theme to guide campaigns and actions. In 2025, the motto is “Awaken the Blue”, with a focus on education and environmental awareness, calling on governments, businesses, schools, and citizens to take responsibility.

The idea is simple yet urgent: raise awareness about the value of oceans and the need to protect them — every day.

What can we do?

Even if we live far from the sea, we all play a part in protecting the oceans. Here are a few impactful actions:

  • Reduce single-use plastic (bags, bottles, straws);

  • Sort waste properly and recycle;

  • Consume seafood responsibly, choosing sustainable species;

  • Avoid products with microplastics, like some cosmetics and scrubs;

  • Take part in beach cleanups or support those who do;

  • Educate yourself and others about the importance of oceans.

A collective responsibility

World Oceans Day reminds us that the sea is not an infinite resource, nor an invisible dumping ground. It’s a precious, complex, and fragile ecosystem that needs respect and protection. If we want to ensure a livable future for the next generations, we must act now.

Every gesture matters. Because protecting the oceans is protecting life.
